FRESH IDEAS
“We wanted to have an opportunity to perform more and try out more material aside from the well vetted large productions we do a few times a year.
The Feral Chihuahuas shows take a lot of work, and if you’ve seen one, you understand why. in 2007 and 2008, We used to do 10 new shows in 12 weeks and that was just a fountain of material and creativity. It kept getting harder and harder to take on that rigorous schedule with our changing lives, what with children, more demanding work schedules and let’s be honest very little financial compensation. What we all wanted, was to perform more often, but without the workload that goes along with a fully produced Feral Chihuahuas show.We were spending entirely too much time vetting and voting for sketches because we were afraid of trying things that might fail and we wanted a less stringent situation, where we could test out some experimental ideas, or sketches that had a hilarious premise but didn’t have an ending, or sketches we weren’t sure about. This will be an opportunity for us to experiment and test fresh ideas in an informal atmosphere with the audience giving us immediate feedback and even contributing.
STANDUP
As you may know, George “the” Bastard has been performing standup alongside the Feral Chihuahuas for five years now, and he will be bringing his unique material to these performances as well. Some of the other members of the Chihuahuas had expressed interest in doing some stand up, and this will also give them an opportunity to test their skills on the single mike.
FILM
It takes a lot of time to shoot and edit all of the films we present during our shows, and with our rigorous rehearsal schedule, our film producer, Wyman Tannehill who also directs and acts was getting killed with little or no sleep trying to get the films ready for upcoming shows. We decided these monthly shows would be a great opportunity to backlog some films without the pressure of big shows. We plan to make one or two new films for each show, to help us to stock up for our big shows, and add another media for comedy at these events.
MUSIC
The music of a Feral Chihuahuas’ show has always been integral to the performance. I, being the sound designer and composer, love to create new comedy music in any genre. I love the challenge of the process, and the aspect of varying talents we can showcase during our performances. So each of these monthly shows we will present one or two new comedy songs. We’ll even ask for suggestions from the audience about future songs featuring A) Hilarious premise or situation coupled with B) genre of music. We’ve made these shows interactive to build an even stronger relationship with our audience.
IMPROV
Yes, Improv. For years it has been the bain of our existence when people call us improv. When you work so hard to write, rehearse, film, edit, compose, produce, etc…it’s tough to be thought of as improv when we are Sketch Comedy. However, we don’t hate improv, and definitely see the merit of off the cuff comedy, and the talent it takes to make it good. We wanted to do some. I wanted to do a different form from the most commonly understood improv, “Game Playing” (Much like you’d see on Who’s Line Is It Anyway?), and try a form that isn’t performed in this area much. That is long form improv. Creating an entire story from scratch with suggestions from the audience. It intrigued us to try this style, and to see if nothing else, what kind of ideas it might generate, as well as it being spur of the moment and hilarious for an audience member to see.
All and all, I think this will be a great opportunity for us to build more material and get a feel for what our audience thinks, as well as a fun, interactive and informal chance to see the Feral Chihuahuas creative process at work. Looking forward to seeing you there.
Peace, love and Teeny Piles of Poop,”
